Retooled Career at Renegade Materials

Shannon Swift was getting desperate. He was laid off from the General Motors DMAX plant in Moraine, Ohio, a place where he thought he would work for the rest of his life. A father of five children, Shannon knew that he had to find a job. His unemployment would soon run out.

At the same time, a new company was just getting started in the Dayton Region, thanks in part to Ohio Third Frontier. Renegade Materials Corporation, a developer of polymer materials for high temperature applications, was completing the construction of its $5 million facility to bring the next generation of aerospace materials to the market. It had been a fast-paced journey and Ohio Third Frontier had been with Renegade at each step: from support for its initial research and development, to help from the Innovation Ohio Loan Fund to build this state-of-the-art facility, to business advice from the Dayton Development Coalition's Entrepreneurial Signature Program also funded in part by Ohio Third Frontier.

For Renegade Materials and for Shannon Swift, Ohio Third Frontier was the bridge they needed to bring them together. Working through Sam Wainscott, a State of Ohio Workforce Development Specialist, Renegade was able to tap into the pool of displaced workers from the DMAX plant. A series of recommendations, tests, and interviews later and Shannon Swift got his opportunity. He was an outstanding worker at DMAX, and now, with On-the-Job Training (OJT) help he would learn the new skills necessary to work in Renegade's next generation high temperature polymer business.

Shannon Swift said that he would not have his job without programs like Ohio Third Frontier. "It's a win, win, win for everyone," Swift commented. "The state doesn't have to pay unemployment, the company gets help training their employees, and I get an opportunity to learn a new trade."
